A) Genre

The genre of my script is adventure/action, however it will include elements of drama. It is obvious that it fits into the genre of action/adventure as it is set in a location which is stereotypical for action adventure films.

The script features elements of drama which works well with the action adventure genre as it makes the script a bit more serious whilst keeping humorous and exciting elements.

The short film will subvert from the usual action adventure genre as it will feature quite a dark twist at the end where the main character snaps and shoots his rival. This is quite a dark turn for a action adventure genre which is usually quite a family friendly genre.

The Idol

INT. OFFICE - NIGHT

M.S a dimly lit office with lots of books and a old computer flashing.

C.U of computer screen revealing a news article reading ‘DISGRACED EXPLORER AT LARGE’ with a mugshot of JOHN next to the headline.

C.U of map of poland on desk. A knife stabs onto the location of the BIALOWIEZA FOREST in poland.

C.U of a hand grabbing a distinctive hat off a chair the hand drags the hat up and places it on JOHN’s head without showing his face.

EXT. BIALOWIEZA FOREST POLAND - DAY

L.S of Forest.

C.U of floor as JOHN’s foot enters the shot. The camera pans up to reveal JOHN’s face as he removes his hat and looks left.

JOHN, 22, Wears a long trench coat, dark trousers. He has a side bag with a map in it and an old pistol round his belt.

L.S of JOHN as he walks into the deserted forest. Birds can be heard in the distance

C.U of JOHN’s piercing eyes As he looks left and right. JOHN slowly pulling out a cigarette and lights it using a flip lighter.

M.S as JOHN checks his map then looks up.

                       JOHN

                Bingo

O.T.S the camera changes focus from JOHN to a shining diamond in the distance lying in a crate on the floor

M.S JOHN begins to walk towards the crystal when he hears footsteps.

                       JOHN (CONT’D)

                Ah shit

M.S JOHN runs to cover from behind a tree.

L.S A figure emerges from the trees. DARREN 20 An explorer who had worked with JOHN before. He wears a brown coat and hat. He has a pistol on his belt, like JOHN.

                       JOHN (CONT’D)

                (WHISPERING)

                For fucks sake not him.

M.S as JOHN gets up from behind the tree.

  DARREN

                Ah John, I didn't expect you to be

                Here.

M.S of DARREN walking over to JOHN then pauses

                                     

C.U of JOHN chucking his cigarette away.

                       JOHN

                This is my treasure Darren, go home.

M.S of Darren standing awkwardly

                       DARREN

                Ah yes but you see…

L.S through trees of JOHN and DARREN standing equally spaced apart

M.S DARREN rubs the back of his head in embarrassment

C.U of JOHN’S hand hovering over a holstered pistol in his pocket

  DARREN

  John calm down I had no idea you were

  on this.

M.S Camera pans across both men

 

  JOHN

  Don't try and bullshit me mate just

  fuck off this is mine, you know how

  much i'm making off this

L.S of both JOHN and DARREN standing equally spaced

An awkward silence fills the air

                       DARREN

                The university have requested I bring

                The idol back, you can’t take it. Now

                If you excuse me.

L.S DARREN begins walking towards the idol a gunshot can be heard off screen.

C.U of DARRENS face as he spins his head around quickly.

                       JOHN

                Turn back now Darren.

M.S revealing JOHN pointing his gun at the sky. Non-diegetic cowbell rings out

L.S showing both JOHN and DARREN. DARREN slowly backs up reaching for his pistol round his belt

C.U of JOHN’S face as he notice’s DARREN reaching for his pistol

                       JOHN (CONT’D)

                Don't do anything stupid now

                       DARREN

                The idol needs to looked after properly

                John, the university needs this.

              

C.U of DARREN’S eyes as the stare directly into JOHN’S

C.U of JOHN’S eyes staring back at DARREN.

L.S panning slowly around the two men now standing equally spaced apart.

M.S of JOHN standing sturdy and on edge.

                       JOHN

                Fuck that stupid university. Turn

                back now.

                       DARREN

                Come on John no one needs to get

                hurt.

C.U of DARREN’S eyes as they dart left and right.

M.S JOHN stands still with concentration. His hand hovering over his pistol.

                       DARREN (CONT’D)

                John you’re not seriously going to

                kill me over an artifact?

                       JOHN

                I don’t know Darren, am I?

L.S panning around DARREN and JOHN.

C.U of JOHN’s hand still over his pistol

O.T.S of JOHN from DARREN’s shoulder. Focus shifts from DARREN’s shoulder to JOHN

                       DARREN

                We used to be partners John come on

M.S of JOHN standing perfectly still

                     JOHN

                Until you ratted me out Darren, but now

 Im hauling in the big bucks. China want

 £50,000 for this.

                       DARREN

                I cant believe your selling out. This

                Isn't you John.

C.U of DARREN’S face. A bead of sweat rolls down his face.

C.U of JOHN’S face. No emotion is shown.

                       JOHN

                Don't play dumb Darren, you knew i was

                dealing artifacts. It's a lot easier now

                Copper coins dont sell as much as ancient

                Idols.

M.S DARREN slowly begins to move towards the Idol.

                       JOHN

                Don’t move Darren

L.S DARREN continues to back up towards the idol.

                       DARREN

                I'm doing what's right it belongs in

                The uni where it can be reasearched.

M.S of the idol

C.U of DARRENS face. A gunshot is fired. Darrens eyes look up revealing a trail of blood running down between his eyes.

M.S of JOHN holding his pistol up towards DARREN.

L.S DARREN slightly turns back and falls dead on the floor

                       JOHN

                (Quietly)

                Fuck

                       JOHN (CONT’D)

                (Shouting)

                Fuck shit fuck

M.S JOHN slowly walks towards DARREN then turns and runs into the trees

C.U of the idol, which now has a splat of blood on it.

Script notes

Changed line of Emily's dialog from “Have you wound the film all the way through?”  to “What’s the point of the using old gear if you don't know how to use it?” be more appropriate and fit to her character as Emily has no experience using older technology and seems to rely heavily on new tech.

Changed the action line “The pair sit in silence for a moment. Suddenly, the barn door shoots open. Cut to black.” to “The pair sit in silence for a moment. Suddenly, the barn door gradually opens. Cut to black.” This change was made to make it so that it seems that Emily sabotaged Peter by pretending that the door was locked.

The script did not need many alterations as we all felt like it was a very good script.
